Toys for 6 to 8 Year Olds

Our toys for 7 year olds, along with picks for 6 and 8 year olds, are chosen for kids who want a real challenge and a finished result they can show off. Think magnetic building block sets, gem dig kits, a kids instant print camera, a 3x3 speed cube, a remote control excavator, a hover soccer ball and a 13 ft octopus kite. Every toy lists its recommended age.

Choosing Toys for 6, 7 and 8 Year Olds

Between 6 and 8, kids start reading instructions, following multi-step projects and caring about winning. Good toys at this age give them a goal and let them do most of the work.

Toys by age

  • 6 year olds: larger magnetic block sets, gem dig kits and the RC excavator, which is listed for ages 6 and up.
  • 7 year olds: active games like the hover soccer ball and glow in the dark sticky balls, both listed for ages 7 and up.
  • 8 year olds: this is when an RC drift car, the crystal growing kit and the USB digital microscope open up.

Educational toys for 6 year olds

Hands-on science feels like play at this age. Digging real gems from a brick, snapping magnets into 3D shapes and working on a speed cube all build patience and problem solving. See more in STEM toys for kids.

Balance building and active play

Mix one building or science toy with one active toy. A kite gets them outside, and a kids instant print camera turns a walk into a photo project, with prints on thermal paper and no ink needed.

Toys for 6 to 8 Year Olds FAQ

What should I get a 7 year old who has everything?

Try a toy that leads to an activity, like a kids instant print camera, a kite or a gem dig kit. These give them something to do instead of another thing on the shelf.

Are RC cars okay for 6 year olds?

Most of our RC cars are listed for ages 8 and up because of their lithium batteries. For 6 and 7 year olds, the remote control excavator, listed for ages 6 and up, is the better pick.

How many pieces do the magnetic block sets have?

Our magnetic building block sets come in 60, 110, 128, 142 or 184 pieces.
